Highlanders ends rugby season on a high note

Chairman of the club, Alistair van Wyk, could not hold back his tears when he expressed his appreciation to coach, Andre Swanepoel, for his passion, hard work and dedication toward keeping rugby alive in Newcastle.

Tears of gratitude and cheers of pride conveyed the sentiment of the Newcastle Highlanders towards the end of its 20th season of rugby.

Members of the Newcastle Highlanders Rugby Club reflected on the highs and lows of the 2022 season at the club’s annual general meeting and prize-giving ceremony on Saturday, October 8.

Chairman of the club, Alistair van Wyk, could not hold back his tears when he expressed his appreciation to coach, Andre Swanepoel, for his passion, hard work and dedication toward keeping rugby alive in Newcastle.

“There is no Highlanders without Coach Swannie,” said Van Wyk.

Looking back at the impact Covid-19 has had on rugby in his report, club captain, Henk Booysen, recalled, “The shock of the Covid-19 pandemic brought the entire world to a standstill and it was no different for the club. It resulted in a year of no rugby in 2020 and brought forward an uncertain 2021 season which was full of learning and adapting to our new world and the game we love. However, it did not stop us from competing in the ‘Covid Cup Final’ which we narrowly lost to Middelburg. This brought high hopes and expectations for the 2022 season.”
