Soccer and netball action at Bhekuzulu grounds

The Mdlalose Sports Tournament took place over the weekend at the Bhekuzulu grounds. Sponsored by Sinqobile Security Services, this was an elimination contest for soccer and netball teams from different areas. The tournament was also held to educate the community about cable theft and protecting railway infrastructure.

The kick-off was at 11:00, and the action came thick and fast. Mr and Mrs Ndwandwe (CEO and managing director from Sinqoblie Security Services) were there, along with staff of the company. Also in attendance was the Mdlalose chief, members of the Mdlalose royal family, Transnet officials, and the community at large.

The semi-finals saw African Touches, a team from Bhekuzulu, playing against Mondlo FC. African Touches won the hard-fought encounter by one goal to nil.
In the other semi-final, Destroyers went head-to-head with Wonder FC. Destroyers were in a destructive mood and clinched victory. This meant that African Touches and Destroyers had booked themselves a place in the final. Destroyers decimated the opposition to claim the cup, new soccer kit, a cash prize and gold medals.

In the younger soccer division, Vryheid Masters beat Sinqobile 2-1 and also received prizes. U/11 boys competed as well, where African Touches won the final 5-0.
As far as the netball was concerned, the final was between Young Stars from eMondlo and Dynamic from Bhekuzulu. Young Stars took home the cup and won a cash prize, as well as gold medals and new netball kit.

“As the sporting community, we would like to thank Mdlalose royals and Sinqobile Security Services for sponsoring these games. We take our hats off to them and we hope they will do the same next year,” said organiser Pat Sithole.
