The Ladies’ and Men’s Club Drawn Pairs competitions were played last weekend in very hot conditions.
In the semi-finals of the women’s competition, Denise Phillips and Mart Browning beat Sue Hutchinson and Carien Coetzee, while Nan Winterbach and Martie Pepler accounted for Eleen Roux and Esther Willemse to set up a rather unexpected – but certainly most pleasing – final.
In an interesting tussle, Denise and Mart edged Nan and Martie to annex the title.
The men’s competition also saw some surprising results.
Billy Nicholas and Anil Durgadin defeated Erich Holm and Johan Coetzee in the first semi-final, while Lou Roux and Mike Hartman beat Ernie Phillips and Gert Roos in the second semi-final.
The final between Billy and Anil, and Lou and Mike will now be played this Saturday afternoon.
It is gratifying to see a number of the newer bowlers coming to the fore and featuring in the latter stages of the club competitions – well done, all.
Harrismith Bowling Club hosted its annual Prince Arthur Tournament last weekend.
This tournament is reputed to be the oldest running competition in South Africa, having started in 1921.
After five games, the eventual winners were Theuns Fraser, John Douthwaite, Braam van Zyl and Stuart Longmore.

Loffie Cronje and team from Reitz Bowling Club were runners-up and in third place was Phillip Scheepers, Hogart Gevers, Andre Vivier and Thinus van Zyl.
The FedAuto Spring Business League is coming to a close with two more rounds before the final evening.
Last Thursday’s games were unfortunately washed out by the welcome rain, but this did not dampen the spirit of all the players, who continued to enjoy fellowship in the clubhouse.
