ESTCOURT: Calls for installation of CCTV cameras on all major roads

It's highly evident that our municipality has become a hot-spot for shootings and drive-by shootings, in particular, while cases go unresolved

The Al Jama-ah Party in Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality calls upon the local municipality and district municipality of uThukela to prioritise the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor all major roads linking Estcourt town and Loskop, Wembezi and the road towards the area of eMabhalanonini.

Our call is prompted by the ongoing and uncontrollable murders of key officials and community members.
We have sadly learned about the death of an RTI officer who was killed in a hail of bullets while travelling on the Rensburg road.

Weeks ago, a taxi owner was killed in a hail of bullets at a junction towards Weenen, while late last year, our own Councillor Kabelo Nthekiso survived a shooting in Wembezi.

It’s highly evident that our municipality has become a hot-spot for shootings and drive-by shootings, in particular, while cases go unresolved.

We therefore call upon the municipality, with the little resources we have, to prioritise the installation of CCTV cameras to assist in tracking down the perpetrators behind the senseless killing of officials.

Al Jama-ah will write to both the municipal administration and provincial law enforcement to heed this important call. We can’t continue with such unresolved killings of councillors in our municipality.

We further convey our condolences to the family and loved ones of the RTI officer who lost his life in the shooting.

Councillor Kabelo Nthekiso (local Al Jama-ah Party Whip)
