Government must reconsider ban on tobacco products

This plea is not for my benefit as I have never surrendered to the supposed glorious allure of tobacco.

In a Nutshell – commentary by Trevor Barnes

I personally hope that somebody who should know better, will come to their senses and raise the embargo on the sale of tobacco products.

This plea is not for my benefit as I have never surrendered to the supposed glorious allure of tobacco. Never been curious enough to have a puff, turn green around the gills and launch into a severe spluttering coughing fit. Be it enough to state that I have not ever experienced the pleasure of that first ‘draw’ in the morning in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

Ultimately, as we all know, the intake of any vapour or smoke into our lungs is definitely injurious to the lung tissue and as we are told, smoking does cause harm to other body parts – and can lead to cancer developing in many organs of the body.

Strange though that this argument about smoking causing lung cancer can be brushed aside as anyone can be afflicted by cancer of the lung and that person may not necessarily have smoked in their life!

Bang goes the argument, but a clever medical professional will, using a devious route, link this lung cancer to passive smoking. Do not believe that one bit. Anyone who reads this article, and is a smoker, will have been vilified frequently because he/she smoked and would have been approached many times by reformed smokers (ie. those that have given up the habit) and others who sincerely want them to stop for the reason of their health, which is laudable.

However, the most aggressive of these two groups of health conscious people are the former. The ones who are no longer a slave to the nicotine stick. I have always wondered if they are really concerned about your health or are they just desperately unhappy and jealous that you are doing that which they may not!

Back to the big picture of the tobacco ban in South Africa, it is that the person who instigated this decision is probably a non-smoker (which is that person’s choice) and is blatantly misinformed of physical nad medical consequences of addiction withdrawal.

Wake up and smell the roses.
