College principal’s five tips for studying online

Create a study environment which is free of distractions and be focused.

The rise of digital learning has become more prevalent since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

With a focus on social distancing and limiting contact with others, the shift from physical to online studies has approached at a rapid rate, whether in the classroom or at college level.

Principal of National Computer College (NCC), Vishay Maharaj has provided his five tips for effective digital learning:

  1. Discipline, motivation, focus

Maharaj said learners/students need to be self-disciplined, by committing to the study program and ensuring all lessons are attended religiously. He added motivation played a huge role in overall success, while lack of motivation led to unhappiness and ultimately failure.

“Have a thirst for success – focus on the what the course/subject requires and plan accordingly, by researching and gaining more information on the required outcomes before and after lessons.”

  1. A reliable and dedicated Internet connection

Maharaj explained most reputable online institutes presented digital classrooms, which allow teachers/lecturers to interact live with their learners/students by use of webcams and microphones. For the best experience, he advised a reliable Internet connection was utilised.

He noted it was important not to use other online applications such as YouTube or Facebook during live webinars (digital classroom sessions), as these applications could cause loss of sound and video in the digital classroom, leading to demotivation and unnecessary blame on the digital learning technology.

“We strongly advise and recommend learners use a 3G or faster connection for optimum results. Keep your microphone and webcam switched off until needed, in order to save bandwidth and data costs.”

  1. Time management

Another important aspect noted by Maharaj is to plan and create a study time table. During study hours, he added, learners/students should ensure they are not disturbed.

“Should you have other regular obligations, plan your timetable in a manner that will work around these obligations and that you will not be disturbed once adhering to this time table.”

  1. Study environment

To create a study environment, Maharaj advised learners/students choose an environment free of distraction and which does not distract others in the household. The study area should have sufficient ventilation, be free of clutter and untidiness, and should resemble a mini classroom or study with required books, charts, pens etc. Televisions, radios and other daily entertainment devices should be kept as far as possible from the work area.

“Advise others in your household that you will be in a study session so they can reduce noise levels or disturbances of any kind. It also ensures they will not abuse Internet bandwidth should you have a shared Internet connection.”

  1. Online discussion

Maharaj advised learners/students participate in all online discussions, and always ask for help if they are unsure. He also promoted effective communication and following the required etiquette.

“Try and save or record any discussions so you can make reference to key points at a later stage. Offer assistance to those who may encounter problems you are already proficient in.”
