From mom, with love

While the cards, texts and phone calls mean a lot, nothing compares to everything you have given my life

My Precious One –

As we have celebrated Mother’s Day, a day that is designated for children to appreciate their moms. You will be among millions reaching out to show your love and appreciation.
You’ll send your sweet text messages, make your phone calls, give cards or flowers, and you may even post on social media pictures and memories of us from the past. And I, being the emotional woman I am, will take your heartfelt words and tuck them away in my memories while wiping away tears of joy as I have in years past.

But this year, I want to take a moment to thank you.
For as long as I can remember, the one thing I wanted to be was a mom. I couldn’t wait for the day to find out I was pregnant, and I have been blessed to have had four of those days in my life.
From the first moment I heard your heartbeat, I changed forever and the trivial things of my life meant nothing to me because you became the essential piece of a life lived well.

I did my best to teach you how to be strong, kind individuals who would take on this harsh world and make it a better place.
I tried to allow you to grow into the person you were created to be.
But in the process of raising you, I realised you were the one teaching me.
When you were young, you reminded me to slow down and enjoy the small things in life, and through your eyes, I discovered the beauty the world holds.

The sky became a more vibrant shade of blue and the world became bigger than me.
Through you, I learned the value of seeing others and that just because we didn’t know someone, it was important to show them they mattered by giving a smile and a simple “Hi” as we crossed paths.
You showed me what unconditional love means when faced with challenges and hard times, and your sweet arms wrapping around my neck confirmed that in the end, family is the only thing that matters.

You were forgiving when I lashed out in frustration. You were accepting when I made mistakes in this role of parenting. You graciously helped me understand the importance of balance, and when life got busy, you patiently waited for your turn for a few moments of my attention.
And perhaps one of the most important things, the one most difficult for me, you were compassionate when I had to learn to let you go.

You are adults now, with lives of your own, and while that saddened me in the beginning, you have shown me that my heart has much more room.
You have taught me how to expand my love by giving me four more children by inviting your spouses into our family. And while I didn’t know them before you fell in love, from the day you were born, I prayed for their lives, their safety and that they would find their way into your heart.

You have made me a better version of myself. You are not only my child, but my best friend, the light in my day, and my pride and joy.
So, this year on Mother’s Day, I want to thank you for the honour of being your mom. While the cards, texts and phone calls mean a lot, nothing compares to everything you have given my life. Because you have helped mould me into the woman I am today.
With All My Love,
Mama
