Don’t panic about Covid-19, just keep soldiering on

If someone has been in contact with one of those affected, they will have to self-isolate to stop the spread of the virus

How is everybody doing in these unusual times we’re living in? I’m very glad the #SiegeofLadysmith2020 has
ended, although it is only temporary.

We need to focus all our attention on the fight against coronavirus (Covid-19). One of the options we have to fight this epidemic with is by washing our hands regularly, so I’m very grateful for all the extra rain we received the last few days and I hope the town’s water problems are sorted out.

Since its outbreak in China at the end of last year, we all (including me) have made jokes about it and sent around many funny memes on WhatsApp. Unfortunately, it has spread to our shores. If someone has been in contact with one of those affected, they will have to self-isolate to stop the spread of the virus.

I don’t think many people will cope with being in quarantine for two weeks. I think I’ll be okay. I have a lot of books I can read again. That’s the fun of being an avid reader. In other countries across the globe – like Italy, Iran and the UK – the virus has spread to many more people and to some it has been fatal.

Luckily, our government has reacted quickly to curb Covid-19. It has already impacted our lives on a large scale. Schools are closed, sport matches and festivals have been cancelled or suspended, our country’s economy (just like other countries worldwide) is taking hits left and right, gatherings with large numbers are prohibited, and some land posts have been closed down.

Make sure of your facts before panicking. People are afraid due to fake news and incorrect information. A lot of people have recovered from the virus completely. Some might only get a strain of the virus.

The other night I was at a braai at my friend’s house. It was lekker, but if the virus keeps on spreading, more social gatherings like this might be at an end for a while.

I can’t tell you how to act during this crisis. I can only recommend that you follow these safety guidelines: wash your hands, keep them away from your face, keep physical contact to a minimum, avoid public places as much as you can, cough in your elbow, and don’t shake hands. If you exhibit any flu-like symptoms, get tested immediately.

All these guidelines and safety measures make me feel as if we are at war against a faceless enemy. It reminds me of the history of the Second World War safety guidelines I read about.

I don’t doubt that scientists will find a cure. If they could find the cure to the Spanish influenza, polio and Congo-fever way back when and they didn’t have the same resources as they do today, then I’m sure they can find a solution for Covid-19.

The only thing we can do is adapt and keep each other healthy. Stay strong.
