Shame on the ‘powers that be’ for failing the town

Why? For failing the town, failing to provide basic services, destroying a once beautiful town and failing to meet ratepayers

Editor –
Shame on who? The ‘powers that be’ – administrator, municipal manager, mayor, heads of departments, ward councillors and committees, South African Police Service and the Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs.

Why? For failing the town, failing to provide basic services, destroying a once beautiful town and failing to meet ratepayers.

Why are the ‘powers that be’ a failure? No experience, no qualifications, no commitment (their aim may be to destroy the town), using positions for enrichment purposes, conducting talk shows, cronies of the ruling party, appointment of staff by buddies, etc.

What proof exists to support these allegations?

1. Observation of the town – potholes, non-removal of refuse, overflowing gutters, overgrown grass (even in town), closure of industries, etc.

2. Weekly articles in the local media highlighting problems. The Estcourt News of January 17 carried seven such articles: Overgrown Verges and Ratepayers Plead, Ratepayers Still Waiting and Fire Station, Continuous Pleas, Visitor Appalled and Civil Servant.

Overgrown verges continue to plague Estcourt

Basic service delivery issues ‘fall on deaf ears’

Visitor appalled by the state of town

Action needed: Act on recommendations made by the Ratepayers Association, as contained in the article ‘Ratepayers Association still waiting…’

A mass meeting with provincial local government.

If not, we will wait forever and the name Estcourt / Umtshezi will be wiped off the map. Final question: If the article has struck a chord with the guilty parties, why not refute the allegations, giving readers feedback, firstly on qualifications, experience, staffing matters and then service delivery issues?

Avoid looming strike action in this once-peaceful town.
