Civil servants – shape up or ship out

Saddened resident writes to the editor about the state of the town falling apart dismally

Editor – President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned government employees who do not want to work to step aside or be removed.

“Our people are tired of promises we make – they are tired of promises, they now want action,” he said.

Yes indeed, we are tired of promises.  Having said that, I must say that everyone who is a ratepayer in Estcourt is imprudent. Yes, you are imprudent!

Would you rather walk into your supermarket and pay the cashier R500 and walk out with only a loaf of bread and a litre of milk for your R500? This is exactly what we, the ratepayers of Estcourt, are doing. We pay Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality our utility bills and municipal rates, but what are we receiving as far as service delivery is concerned?

They will increase the tariffs and rates to suit their needs. Very soon, our utility bills and municipal rates will supersede our monthly income. Don’t just sit back and accept the increased tariffs that are thrown at us. Do something about it. Make a noise, write letters to the newspaper and join the Ratepayers’ Association.

Do not allow the corruption to escalate and bring us down. Cyril Ramaphosa says the model he is implementing will ensure that corruption ends and the thieves are caught, more so in the municipalities, South African Police Service (SAPS) and health services.

Almost all the roads in Estcourt have deteriorated to such an extent as to create danger to motorists and pedestrians. This is also the cause of the many accidents we witness all the time. Poor drainage systems are a major cause of the damage to our roads.

The problem has become extreme and is consequently creating panic among motorists. Keeping the above in mind, I hope the concerned authorities will initiate expeditious steps to ensure a good formation of the roads in our town and surrounding areas.

Our SAPS has fallen apart dismally. A few years ago, the Estcourt News published an article about 24 murder cases in Forderville that have not been solved. Sadly, to this day, no attempt has been made to reply to that article. Just shows how laid-back they are in performing their duties. Remember, you have a job to do, so get down and perform or step aside.

Can you imagine what the family members of the deceased are going through? Last year, we read that a seasoned ex-Wembezi detective who was last based in Newcastle has left the SAPS. It would be a good idea to engage the services of this experienced man to come in and educate members at the Estcourt station.

Please, please, Mr Municipal Manager, stop spending thousands of rands on fancy full-colour embroidered T-shirts, jerseys and full-colour desk calendars and wall-hanging calendars, and get our town back like how it used to be. Otherwise, please step aside.

All citizens of this beautiful country pay their taxes and dues, so please, government servants, perform in your duties and make our town and country a great place to live in.

By doing that, you will enjoy spending your salary, knowing that you have worked for it. Your children are watching you, so make them proud too.
