[LETTER] Strange weather is a sign of the times

'We cause so much destruction to the environment it surely cannot be a surprise when Mother Nature pushes back.'

Madam – Has anyone else noticed what strange weather we have been getting in Newcastle, and around the country?

Just recently, there was a tornado in Utrecht and other areas in KZN. When have you ever heard of that happening?

Tornadoes were something that only happened in America – when we were kids we watched movies like Twister with such fascination, never once thinking that something like that could affect us in sunny South Africa. What can we attribute this strange weather phenomenon to?

Most people I speak to say it’s the cause of global warming. We, as humans, cause so much destruction and devastation to the environment that it surely cannot be a surprise when Mother Nature decided to push back.

Yet there are still those who deny the existence of global warming altogether, and claim these natural occurrences take place at random and not for any reason other than it was supposed to happen. Can you imagine going through life with those blinkers on?

One of the universal laws we all learn is that every action has a reaction (consequence) – how then can you explain all the ‘freak storms’ we have been getting in SA?

I think people need to become more conscious about the environmental decisions they make, because if we don’t pay heed to what we put into the earth, we will all be paying the price.
