Locals appeal for open communication

Concerned Citizen hopes councillors can better communicate with community members

Editor – Through the medium of your newspaper, let me firstly take this opportunity to thank you, Danielle Greaves and your team at Estcourt News, for a great job.

You were very helpful to the Wembezi family, whose belongings were damaged by fire recently. Well done and thank you!

Now I wish to voice certain issues the community members of Wembezi are experiencing regarding electricity cut-offs. They have been to the municipal offices to complain.

The biggest issue here is the big gap between residents and councillors. No community meetings are called to update community members about any matters affecting them directly.

It is not a matter of refusing to pay rates, no! Most households are indigents and our municipality has a policy (indigent policy) and most of the people who don’t have electricity are pensioners, and some are expected to take their medication and so forth.

The Mnikathi, Hadebe, Mvelase and Ngcobo families suffered the most from these constant electricity cuts. I believe that if councillors can call community meetings and explain the importance of paying for municipal services, and also explain what service delivery challenges they face, we can work on a way forward together.
