The Drakensberg Secondary School ‘Class of 1989’ group had their 30th reunion earlier this year and decided to support the Estcourt CanSA Relay as a legacy project.
Many 89’ers, both those who are locally based and those who have left Estcourt to pursue careers elsewhere in the country (and indeed in the world), owe their success to humble beginnings in Estcourt.

We are collectively proud of our Estcourt heritage (in Heritage Month) and proud of the strong foundation of values that were instilled in us as children by parents, teachers and community leaders in the 70s and 80s growing up in the town.
The 89’ers CanSA Relay Legacy project was driven by a strong collective desire to pay-it-forward and return some of the many blessings the town gave to us.
The CanSA Relay that took place on the weekend of September 7 is a very special event.
Fund-raising efforts aside, it is amazing how a small community can pull together across race, economic background and religion to rally behind those who are struggling against cancer.

In an ocean of polarisation and conflict, the CanSA Relay is an island of unity and strength. Indeed, as hopeful as we are that cancer can be beaten by this united Estcourt community, so too are we hopeful that squalor, unemployment, addiction and crime can be overcome by this same community of fighters with a unified spirit.
Thank you to Mr Anil Sookraj and his CanSA Relay organising committee for their commitment to this event and for their loyalty to the community of Estcourt at large. Sir, your team must collectively have the biggest hearts in the world. Not only do you give hope to cancer patients and their loved ones, but you also keep the flame of unity and love alive in Estcourt, despite its very many real struggles.

Mr Sookraj, with your spirit, you make it clear that the impossible is possible.
I’d also like to thank Ajay and Neera Sewbran and OUTsurance’s Staff Helping SA OUT project for their role in helping our legacy project achieve its financial goals with the fund-raising drive.
This event and all its role players have again shown the power of love to move mountains. It is better to give than to take. It is better to build than to break. God bless all those touched by cancer. God bless Estcourt.
