Challenge others to be part of change – Mixed Masala

Instead of recording fights and posting them online, why not record a good deed and encourage others to do the same?

Have you ever participated in an Internet challenge? Over the years, numerous internet challenges have gone viral, prompting people from around the world to try them.

The most recent trend is the bottle cap challenge. The task involves unscrewing the top from a water bottle with a single roundhouse kick, and it got its start in the world of MMA. Soon it spread like wildfire, with numerous celebrities also taking on the challenge.

Before that, there was the Kiki Challenge, which consists of jumping out of a moving car and dancing along to the Drake song ‘In My Feelings’ and prior to that, the Ice Bucket Challenge. There have been numerous other trends which have gone viral over the years, with people eager to be part of the ‘it’ crowd. Only the Ice Bucket Challenge promoted some good.

The challenge, which involved dumping a bucket of ice and water over a person’s head, either by another person or self-administered, was used to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and encourage donations to research.

But why aren’t there more challenges that promote good? Why don’t we challenge people to be kind to strangers or challenge each other to accept people of different races or religions?

Let’s challenge politicians to not lie during their terms of office or misuse funds. Let’s challenge people to earn their own money as opposed to stealing it. Let’s challenge people to be kind to animals and children and to treat them right. Let’s challenge each other to step out of our comfort zones and support local events that we normally wouldn’t attend. In a world where the internet defines so much of what we do, why don’t we use it to do more good?

Instead of recording fights and posting them online, why not record a good deed and encourage others to do the same. As Gandhi said, ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’ So let’s be part of that change and challenge others to do the same.
