“Who will guard the guards?”

The previous monitoring system with the parking meters which stood sentinel, is now declared archaic.

Madam – What a pleasant surprise to read the Parking Notice from the Newcastle Municipality, on page 22 of the Newcastle Advertiser of June 21, inviting ‘interested’ and affected persons to an information session.

After all the complaints about shop owners hogging the parking, it is about time a pay-as-you-park experience was introduced in the CBD.

The previous monitoring system with the parking meters which stood sentinel, is now declared archaic.

Apparently, this system involves a parking attendant using a handheld scanner to scan a coded marker and thus capture your arrival and departure from that parking space.

Cash payment is made to the attendant, and a supervisor oversees the whole operation. Scary thought!

The archaic parking meter has a feed slot into which you fed the money to activate the parking meter.

An official from the traffic department would then remove the full cash receptacle and replace it with an empty one, and the process went on.

So now, to quote an old axiom: “Who will guard the guards?” Lets hope this initiative encourages more folk to shop in town, now that parking spaces may be more readily accessible to all and sundry.
