My gratitude to the late Mr Govender

"I'd just like to take this opportunity to honour a man who was well loved and even more respected..."

Sir – When I heard of the passing of beloved teacher, Mr P.S. Govender, I realised I’d never get a chance to thank him.

Mr Govender served as a teacher at Dannhauser Secondary School for many years, and it was during that time that I had the privilege of meeting him.
He taught us geography and was the reason it soon became my favourite subject. He always had patience when it came to his learners, no matter how testing we could be at times.

I also had the privilege of knowing him later in life once he retired and saw him as a father and grandfather and not just the teacher we knew. It was heartwarming to see a man that I admired growing up, was the same at home as he was in school, but probably less strict.

I’d just like to take this opportunity to honour a man who was well loved and even more respected. When I look up at the sky now, I won’t just fondly remember your lessons on clouds, but I will know that you’re looking down on us from heaven as well.
