‘Our struggle is not yet over’ – LETTER

For years now, service delivery protests - burning tyres, blocking roads - have been reduced to mere footnotes on the daily traffic reports on radio and TV

Sir –
Now that the ANC has again secured power, albeit with a reduced majority, can we expect service delivery protests to ease? For years now, service delivery protests – burning tyres, blocking roads – have been reduced to mere footnotes on the daily traffic reports on radio and TV.

The protests are because residents are given inferior service because money meant for upgrading living standards has been diverted to friends and family – i.e. cadre enrichment. The same has happened locally. One sees the state of deterioration on our streets, no water for days in Dannhauser – Dundee and Glencoe in tatters.

Municipal officials dressing as they please in the Municipal building as there is probably no discipline. They just want residents to pay and pay but there is no service. When asked about service they will say but we are giving hundreds of thousands of Rands to the Dundee July – what’s the problem?

But that only benefits a few of the politically connected and the liquor stores. When we bring back a caring society, we can say the struggle is over. Up until then, it continues.
