Reader ‘disgusted’ by municipality’s response to Clover fire

It seems as if the fire fighting vehicles are not in working condition. Where in the world does one allow something like this to happen?

Allow me, through the medium of this newspaper express my, and I am sure, the community’s disgust at the inability of the local fire services to assist with the fire, which broke out at the Clover factory last week.

MUST READ: Call for help from Clover came too late – says Municipal Manager

The money spent on the amalgamation of the Umtshezi Municipality with a municipality that was basically run into the ground has added to these costs (how did COGTA and the government allow this) as well as the number of people employed who do not seem to contribute positively to the wellbeing of our town. So many general workers but our town is filthy! Where do they go to after 9am?
And it seems there is no money for maintenance of equipment and roads etc. as a large portion of the monies goes to salaries.

Communities need to take a stand against the rampant corruption; however you need to play your part by paying for rates and services. There is, and can never be something like a free ride and then you demand all the services, which go with it. Indiscriminate building in places where there are no services, after which people start toyi toying for such.

Have pride in your surroundings, keep your environment clean and tidy, and refrain from dumping your refuse anywhere. As adults you need to set an example to the children who are the future.

The municipality also needs to begin enforcing the bylaws. This town has become a cesspool of lawlessness and filth, with people selling on the pavements, taking up space for the pedestrians.

Every corner reeking of faeces and urine and people not giving a damn! The time has come to do your part, civil servants as well as well as the man in the street.
