LETTER: Who is responsible for long grass?

Not only being attacked by people but being bitten by snakes. Is the fear residents have due to overgrown grass.

Madam –

Who is responsible? This question I ask myself over and over again!

Is it the responsibility of the Municipality or the Postal Services? Whoever is responsible need to address this matter very urgently for this is not acceptable, because women mostly fetch their post/mail and with this overgrowth it is a huge danger.

Not only being attacked by people but being bitten by snakes.

Which are the worst that can happen in such a case? We the rate payers would appreciate immediate hands-on where people could be mugged or even be bitten by snakes due to long grass growing like trees at the postal areas.

I urge whoever is responsible to make sure that the grass are kept short to avoid life-threatening possibilities.

Response from Dr Dumisani Thabethe, Customer Relations Manager and Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality:

Investigations have been conducted in this regard.

The overgrown grass is on the Municipal land and currently we haven’t reached the area as per our grass cutting schedule but the complaint of overgrown grass near Amajuba Park post box has been noted; and the team will be dispatched today (March 13, 2019) to clean on that area.
