Editor – Thank you for the cover story on Alfred Duma and the late Ahmed Kathrada, describing their struggle against apartheid and their commitment to the creation of a non-racial democratic South Africa.
Our school, the ‘Islamic Educational Centre (IEC)’, was privileged to host a function in 2014 at which Mr Kathrada was our guest of honour.
This was a rare opportunity to meet and interact with a struggle stalwart of his calibre. In his address to our children that Saturday afternoon, he made a pertinent and touching statement.
During his period of incarceration and isolation, he sorely missed the companionship of children and endeared himself to our children with his gentleness, humour, sincerity and genuine appreciation of their interactive session.
After liberation, he and Mr Mandela devoted much of their time to promoting the welfare of our children. Madiba and Uncle Kathy had faith in the younger generation, continuing to aspire and fulfil the norms and values enshrined in our constitution.
