MUST READ: Newcastle 911 to the rescue

I am so grateful, because each week in the paper we physically see where they have made a difference.

Madam – In the past few months, I have felt safer living in Newcastle.

This is not because of a low crime rate, and definitely not because of our apathetic police department.

All credit for this newfound safety is thanks to the Newcastle 911 community members and the fantastic work they are doing for this town.

I think that too often people are content to moan about what the police do not do. There is hardly ever a time when someone steps up and makes the change themselves.

The selfless members of the 911 response team are making such a massive change in the community, that the police are being put to shame.

These men and women sacrifice their own time, using their own vehicles and petrol, to keep our streets safe.

I am so grateful, because each week in the paper we physically see where they have made a difference. While some of us are curled up in our beds or spending time with family and friends, these members are out making sure we are safe.

They never say no, and no job is too big or small for them to attend. We personally had an incident, months ago, where we phoned the police to report a crime.

Almost two hours and dozens of phone calls later, not one single officer had arrived to help. We then contacted the 911 group, and within minutes, someone came to help.

In a country where crime has become the norm, this type of service from residents in the community is something else.

We should all look at joining 911, and doing our bit to contribute to our community.

By standing together, we can achieve so much more than complaining and lamenting the state of things. I urge residents to consider joining 911.
