Teenage drug abuse and addiction

Having friends who avoid drugs may be your teen’s best protection from drug abuse and addiction

What is teen substance abuse? Many teens try drugs. Some teens try drugs only a few times and stop, while others cannot control their urges or cravings for them. This is substance abuse.

Why do teens abuse drugs? They want to fit in with friends or certain groups. They like the way it makes them feel. They believe it makes them more grown up. Teens tend to try new things and take risks, so they may take drugs because it seems exciting. Teens with family members who take drugs are more likely to have serious drug problems. Also, teens who feel they are not connected or valued by their parents are at greater risk. Teens with poor self-esteem, emotional or mental health problems such as depression are also at increased risk.

What problems can teen drug abuse cause? Drug abuse can lead to serious problems such as poor schoolwork, loss of friends, problems at home, legal problems, violence, suicides, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

What should you do if you find out your teen is using drugs? If your teen is using drugs, take it seriously. The most important thing you can do is talk openly with your teen about the problem, urge them to do the same and try not to be harsh. Be very supportive during this time. If your teen has tried drugs only a few times, talking openly about the problem may help them. If your teen is addicted to drugs, they will need treatment and a lot of counselling.

Can teen drug use and drug abuse be prevented? Talk to your child early about drugs. Keep your teen busy with activities.
Expect your teen to follow household rules. Set reasonable consequences for behaviour that needs to change and consistently carry out the consequences. Know your child’s friends. Having friends who avoid drugs may be your teen’s best protection from drug abuse and addiction.
