Park should be family-friendly and not just a place for drunks

The bins in the park run over with empty wine boxes and liquor bottles, which is a disgrace

Editor – On Sunday, we had a family outing to Wimpy Park. When we got there, there were people drinking, with loud music coming from the cars. The music is not as much of a problem as the drinking. I hate that I have to expose my children to that.

It is a family park, open to all, and yet alcohol is permitted. The bins in the park run over with empty wine boxes and liquor bottles – this is a disgrace. As the day progressed, we enjoyed the park, not minding the people drinking.

We were throwing a ball around, passing it to one another, when a person I assume is the caretaker came to us and told us that balls are not allowed. Please explain to me how on earth alcohol is allowed but the children cannot even play with a ball. They were not throwing the ball in the area where the cars were parked, nor were they disturbing anyone. Other parents’ children even joined in passing the ball to one another.

To top things off, there is signage at the entrance that states the opening and closing times of the park, yet the caretaker chases away residents way before it is supposed to close.

This park was opened for the community, but I (as a community member) am highly displeased with the manner in which things are handled. I say: Out with the alcohol and in with the balls!

Let’s make this something we (as residents of Ladysmith) can be proud of.
