Sir
A couple of weeks ago the Courier was kind enough to print my request for a copy of R O Pearse’s first book, Empty Highways.
It’s the fascinating, well-written account of how the 34-year-old Reg and his young wife, Edith (née McKenzie), drove in their Model T Ford from Dundee to Uganda and back in 1934.
They weren’t alone in such odysseys!
He recounts being overtaken by a Morris Minor (on “atrocious” roads in southern Kenya) en route to England from Cape Town – and passing by another Morris that had just come through the Sahara!
Margaret Dekker and her sister, Stella Smuts, were the “angels” who got the precious book (eBay calls it “Very Rare”!) to me from Cape Town, for which I am so grateful. The good news for modern-day Dundonians (and others) is that we are trying to have copies of Empty Highways printed for you. As Terry Worley would say, “Watch this space!”
