LETTER: Woman loses husband in fire

A woman has tragically lost her husband who was an invalid, in a fire that occurred in their humble dwelling, because they had no electricity.

Madam – It’s with heartfelt pain and sorrow that I write about the latest tragedy that has occurred in our community.

A woman has tragically lost her husband who was an invalid, in a fire that occurred in their humble dwelling, because they had no electricity. In my opinion, we as a community should feel guilty for this unacceptable incident, in that we see our fellow man suffering, but instead, we cast a blind eye and it is all about me myself and mine!

It seems like we are only willing to perform our benevolent deeds in the “limelight” and in front of flashing cameras. Evidently, we overlook our poor and destitute neighbours, while we cross “oceans” to help others!

Which is well and good, but if we assist our neighbours first, we will never have such tragic incidences occurring. My next question is; where are our ward councillors? We are on the threshold of casting our votes again, so this is about the only time we see or hear from our ward councillors.

Councillors, and different organisations should take up the challenge to visit and be familiar with the needs of the people in our communities. This should be done on a continual basis, and not only when voting time comes around.

In this way the poor and the needy will be identified, and be assisted in their time of need. I know that there are many Good Samaritans (including ward councllors) and unsung heroes who have an open heart, and a helping hand towards the underprivileged, God bless you all and let us keep up the good work!
