Merit for our medics

These men and women work long hours, and, more importantly, save lives every single day.

Madam –

Over the last few weeks, the Newcastle Advertiser has published three stories featuring paramedics who were open about their daily toils.

While some may consider this a ploy to make contacts, I find it insightful and inspiring.

These men and women work long hours, and, more importantly, save lives every single day.

With very few complaints, they work around the clock and often go beyond the call of duty.

I cannot envision what it must be like to witness death and destruction on the scale these unsung heroes do.

They quite literally have to pick up the pieces at accidents scenes, and move along with their day – just like that!

Can you imagine the strain on their psyche? Can you imagine the physical and emotional stress they endure?

Despite this, they find the strength and courage to persist, and make the most of it.

I certainly agree that one has to be passionate in order to excel in this line of work.

I wonder if patients ever stop to thank the guardian angels who pry them from death’s cold clutches. Well, maybe they should!

Myra van der Merwe, Michelle van Tonder, Creag Harry and fellow paramedics of Newcastle, I salute you…

Saving lives really is the ultimate achievement; your actions truly are worthy of praise!
