Sir
Another weekend and another mess in Coronation Park. The situation there is well documented on these pages, but still the problem persists.
The signs that the municipality put up, warning against making fires, littering, making noise etc, are all blatantly ignored. Indeed, the sign on the Victoria Street has simply been removed giving transgressors carte blanche. Calling the police is problematic. When a van is available there is a reluctance to act as there is an apparent uncertainty over who is responsible for implementing by-laws. The police or traffic department?
When the municipality gives permission for the Dundee July party at the Oval to go through until 6am at the Oval it also invites other laws to be broken i.e. drinking in public, drunken assaults, traffic offences and therefore imposes another people’s freedoms i.e. the right to peace and quiet.
We have many laws but these are useless if there is no enforcement.
What we need is a section called the Park Police. Green-uniformed units who patrol parks and clamp down on party law breakers. Then all that residents need to do is call this unit without having to call the police or the traffic department.
And then, just maybe, we will get our parks back and won’t have to wake up on a Monday and look at the horrible mess people seem to think it is fine to leave behind.
Party Peter
