Old statues make great scars

Our statues and heritage sites should not be destroyed, but rather be seen as scars that reflect the wars we fought and won. We are stronger than the ancient forces that attempted to dominate us.

Dear Madam,

In regards to the article, The meaning of the statue in front of the town hall, I must admit, the mayor was spot on.

Our country has a history, a somewhat bloody one, but one we need to be proud of.

South Africans have overcome overwhelming odds through the centuries.

Our people overcame British colonialism, Dutch oppression, Apartheid and are now fighting xenophobia.

Our statues and heritage sites should not be destroyed, but rather be seen as scars that reflect the wars we fought and won. We are stronger than the ancient forces that attempted to dominate us.

We can now move freely, live and start families together and all because there were people brave enough to pave the way.

Those old statues might reflect a belief that we might not agree on, but because of that, something new and magical was created.

That old statue’s creation was the reason a nation stood up and said no longer shall we be divided.

Let’s move forward and create new a new and proud people, so we can build new statues next to the old, and prove time does truly heal all wounds.

Proudly South African
