The Birds and the Bees

Talking about sexual and reproductive health with our children is very important.

Many parents shy away from this conversation, feeling that talking about sex is like encouraging it. The hard truth is that young people talk about sex and are exposed to sexual content from an increasingly younger age.

As a parent, it is better to give your child accurate information. Information supplied by friends or the Internet is often sensational and can promote unrealistic and untrue beliefs about sex. This can lead to immature, risky and often depersonalised sexual behaviour, like sharing naked photos.

Sit with your children and talk about the sanctity of sex and how best to approach it in relationships. Explain that pornography is unrealistic. These kinds of conversations are also useful in opening a channel of communication between you and your child, which makes them more likely to ask for your help in the future (and remember your help is likely to be better than a friend or strangers).

Put your fear of sex in your pocket and getting talking with your children.
