It’s been almost ten years since I last visited Estcourt. I spent most of my childhood school holidays here and it is a town that brings back fond memories of fishing in the Bushmans River, trips to the dam and the warm feeling of being in a small town.
However, this changed when I visited in December. I was dismayed to find that I was complaining more than complimenting. I tried to be fair, reasoning that with urbanisation comes some decay, but I failed to understand how Estcourt has slipped into such a state of disrepair.
The roads and sidewalks are in an appalling condition and this is not only concentrated to certain high traffic areas. I noticed a number of water and sewage leaks and in some areas, the remnants of older leaks are still evident on some sidewalks and roads. The town hall also wears a suit of neglect, and inside is much worse.
I could go on and on but I’m sure that most readers are familiar with these complaints. Generally, Estcourt looks old and tired. These images left such an imprint on me that I felt compelled to pen a letter and express them. On the flip side I was pleased to see big chain stores trading in Estcourt and that locals are still friendly and welcoming.
