Sir
I refer to the excellent letter from “Disappointed” that appeared in the Courier dated December 5, on the subject of the closure of the Dundee Crisis Centre’s Feeding scheme. It is an absolute scandal that the Municipality, in its so-called wisdom, should close down this valuable facility.
The feeding scheme benefits the town in so many ways:
1. It provides food for people who have limited income, and helps maintain their health.
2. It recycles items that would otherwise be taken to the dump, where they would take decades to biodegrade, if ever.
3. It enables Orange Grove to dispose of its surplus in a manner that benefits the community.
4. The sale of the recycled items raises valuable money for the Crisis Centre.
People have complained about the people who congregate at the Crisis Centre, and the litter they make, yet the Crisis Centre cleans up after each event and Birkett Street is therefore one of the cleanest streets in the town. At the same time, a shebeen is allowed to operate in the same street!
Where do the priorities of the Municipality lie? Take a look at the square in front of the Boxer Supermarket on Victoria Street. During Talana Live!, an event that brings many visitors to Dundee, there was a gathering there causing excessive noise and litter. What a sight for visitors to our town! And yet a scheme, in a back street, which benefits those that the Municipality calls “indigent” is to be closed.
Wake up Dundee – campaign for the continued existence of this facility that benefits our town in so many ways.
