Sir,
Oh, for a brain implant into some of our erstwhile officials’ heads! Now they have ordered all trees along the roads to be cut down – not just alien species – thorn trees and other indigenous trees are all being felled. This leaves no shade along any of our roads, and I see no new trees being planted!
Our road workers/’sleepers’ now lie on farmers’ lands as there are no longer trees along the roads for their daily naps. Even the people tasked with the tree felling have to park their vehicles on farmers’ land to gain some shade!
No tree debris (leaves and smaller branches) is being cleared away so the fire hazard increases, especially in the farming areas as the grass is already drying off. We are reminded by the Department of Environmental Affairs to plant trees, save existing trees and not waste paper – yet that very government orders the felling of trees! I ask for an explanation on the felling of trees and a tree regeneration programme to be proposed. Very Confused
