Q: Sir, why is there no one available to answer phonecalls at the Municipal Offices, Amajuba District Municipality or Emergency numbers listed in the phonebook ? I placed a call to all the above between 13:15 and 13:30 on 26/11/2013 and got through to a Security Guard at Amajuba District Municipality who only had a cellphone number for inquiries. This followed a message sent via whatsapp that the water for Newcastle and surrounding areas has been contaminated by substances from a mine in the area.Thank you.

A: I cannot answer for Amajuba District as that is a separate municipality. Our emergency number is (034) 3284700. ECR caused a panic with the mine acid, they were discussing long term effects of coal mines. Most of our mines were shut down in the 80s and we have no effect in our water. We monitor the water quality everyday.

Q: Good day. first of all I would like to thank you for the new christmas lights that have been put up on our street lights as one drives into newcastle. However we really need some attention with our street lights in Dirkie Uys ave and surrounding roads. It is very dark and unsafe. All my attempts to resolve the problem has fallen on deaf ears. Many thanks.

A: I will have the department look into it immediately. Your ward councillor should be doing this…

Q: I congratulate Newcastle for having an innovative mayor. What can we do for Memel to be incorporated into NN?

A: Thank you, Memel is in another province and I can assure you that even if it was part of Newcastle, we would struggle because of the distance. It’s best to engage your municipality. The payment of rates and taxes there will be critical to your upliftment.
