Mr Jhundu Khan was the grandfather of Mr GRI Khan and not Mr Essop J Khan

Re: ‘Down Windsor Lane’ dated November 1, 2013, in the Ladysmith Gazette.

I would like to respond to the incorrect information given by the writer, Mr Iqbal Khan.

The writer states that Mr GRI Khan was the grandson of Mr Essop J Khan. Mr Essop J Khan was the father of Mr GRI Khan. Mr Essop J Khan was one of the six sons of the late Mr Jhundu Khan. During 1925, Prince Edward of Wales visited South Africa, who later was crowned King Edward, thereafter the Duke of Windsor.

On June 2, 1925, the then Prince of Wales visited Ladysmith. Mr Jhundu Khan was honoured to escort the prince on a parade from the present railway station, in full military uniform on horseback and with a sword, to the Ladysmith Town Hall.

Mr Writer, the above information is to advise you that Mr Jhundu Khan was the grandfather of Mr GRI Khan and not Mr Essop J Khan.

More information will be forwarded to Mr Editor regarding the families of Mr Jhundu Khan.

In the first issue of ‘Down Windsor Lane’, the writer appealed for more information on Windsor High School. I contacted the writer to contact my cousin, Mr GRI Khan, who designed the present uniform. For some unknown reason, the writer failed to contact Mr GRI Khan.

During the time of the secondary school (then plain maroon blazers) around 1956, Mr NG Chetty (principal) and Mr CM Nair (form master) appointed Mr GRI Khan to design the present uniform, comprising blazer, tie and monogram.

On two previous presentations, the uniform was rejected with three strips due to clashes with other schools. On the third attempt, Mr GRI Khan added the fourth silver strip, which was accepted and the name changed from Secondary School to Windsor High School in 1957, and the birth of the uniform was around 1958-1959. Some ±54 years.

The above information regarding the uniform is of great importance to past and present students of Windsor High School (information supplied as per Mr GRI Khan). Information on the Prince of Wales as per Mr RG Reddy.
