#ThrowBackThursday: Five nostalgic cartoons that made your childhood awesome

We look back at five cartoons which made our childhoods something to remember.

A cartoon influences our perception of the world as children.

Back in the day, you’d wake up on a Saturday morning, turn on the television, and spend the rest of the day binge-watching your favourite cartoon, which had you laughing out loud and the quick and quirky humour.

However, it appears that today’s cartoons are not quite making the cut anymore!

For this week’s #ThrowBackThursday, we take a look back at some of the most iconic and memorable cartoons of all time:

  1. Courage the cowardly dog:

The title character (Courage) was a dog that lives with an elderly couple in a farmhouse in the middle of ‘Nowhere’. In each episode, the trio is thrust into bizarre, frequently disturbing, and paranormal or supernatural adventures. The series was best known for its dark, surreal humor and atmosphere.

2. Johnny Bravo:

Johnny Bravo, who was based on Elvis Presley and James Dean, was a sunglasses-wearing, muscular young man who lived with his mother and tried to get women to date him, but he always failed due to his actions. He often found himself in strange situations and predicaments. The show was known for its adult humor and pop culture references throughout its run.

Ed, Edd n Eddy:

The plot revolves around three friends named Ed, Edd (also known as “Double D” to avoid confusion with Ed), and Eddy, who are referred to collectively as “the Eds.” They live in the fictional town of Peach Creek in a suburban cul-de-sac with Kevin, Nazz, Sarah, Jimmy, Rolf, Jonny, and the Eds’ female adversaries, the Kanker Sisters, Lee, Marie, and May. The trio frequently devises schemes to extort money from their peers in order to purchase their favorite confection, jawbreakers, under the unofficial leadership of Eddy. Their plans almost always fail, leaving them in a variety of humiliating and painful situations.

Cow and Chicken:

The series follows the misadventures of two unlikely yet somehow biological siblings: the 7-year-old Cow and her cynical 11-year-old older brother. The two are frequently involved in misadventures with their flamboyant adversary, the Red Guy, a comical version of the Devil himself who disguises himself under various personas to either scam them or take them to Hell.

Chicken and Cow’s delirious human parents, Dad and Mom, are only seen from the waist down and are implied to have no torsos, heads, or arms.

The humour in the series is eccentric, surreal, grotesque, and repulsive. In the cafeteria, for example, Cow and Chicken always order ‘pork butts and taters’, the Red Guy always shows his butt, and characters frequently use malapropisms and sarcasm.

The storylines depicted are frequently based on traditional childhood fears, anxieties, or phobias, such as cooties or venturing into the girls’ restroom, but are comically enhanced.

Recess:

The series follows six elementary school students as they interact with their peers and teachers. In the North American tradition of educational schooling, the title refers to the recess period during the daily schedule, when students are not in lessons and are outside in the schoolyard. During recess, the students create their own society, complete with government and a class structure, against the backdrop of a regular school.
