NEWCASTLE KZN: Mayor calls on scouts to unearth local soccer talent

Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba has committed to hosting the Annual Mayoral Soccer Tournament.

Newcastle Local Municipality has congratulated KwaZulu-Natal based outfit, Richards Bay Football Club, for being the only KZN side to advance to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

“Richards Bay FC stunned TS Sporting after coming from a goal behind and thumped the hosts in the last 16 Nedbank Cup encounter in Mbombela,” explained Mlungisi Khumalo, Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality.

The 2-1 win brings the team a step closer to its quest to clinch the much-coveted cup, which began with the knock-out of the formidable Kaizer Chiefs in what has been described as a ‘nail-biting thriller’.

“The municipality also unequivocally wishes the National First Division side well in their arduous search for promotion to top-flight football. As part of supporting the development of soccer at grassroots level, the municipality encourages local soccer clubs to simulate the zealousness displayed by Richards Bay FC,” added Khumalo.

Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba has since heaped praise on the team: “The Richards Bay Football Club is a typical example of what sheer determination and passion can achieve. The unscripted scenario displayed by the team is a constant reminder that KwaZulu-Natal is richer in local soccer talent, and that it can only be unearthed if we expose youngsters to the global stage.”

His sincere hope, he added, was that small clubs in Newcastle would imitate the fearlessness and drive shown by Richards Bay FC.

“As Mayor, I have also attempted to beguile the team to set their sites at exploring talent in our area.”

In this regard, Dr Mahlaba has reached out to Richards Bay FC to encourage the team to scout and uproot local talent in Newcastle and has further committed to hosting the Annual Mayoral Soccer Tournament in Newcastle.

He has made a ‘passionate plea’ to soccer agents to grace the event, which is expected to kick-off once the country has been declared coronavirus free, or once all Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted.
