Learners from Harpo Primary School closed off the term by taking part in a career dress-up event.
The event, which was mainly aimed at the Grade 7 learners, was held at the school grounds, with learners wearing different outfits that imitated the career they want to pursue after matric. Needless to say, there were medical doctors, pilots, farmers, lawyers, engineers, cardiologists, traffic officers and the list continues. The learners also did presentations on why they want to embark on their chosen profession. They told their peers how many years they would have to study and where they can study to obtain the required qualification.
Ayanda Kubheka commented that the aim of the career dress-up event was to expose and instil a culture of goal-oriented learning at an early age in children’s development.
Buyisani Khanyile, who was the guest speaker on the day, read a quote that says: ‘As long as a lion does not know how to write, the story of the lion will always praise the hunter’. He said that learners must be able to ‘define themselves’, as well as have goals in life to measure their abilities and capabilities. “A gift is more than education, because education is an assistant to what you are. A gift defines purpose, so one needs to have a purpose, as this defines their vision.”
Many other professionals also gave speeches about their professions and donated career-related equipment that the learners used to execute various tasks.
