Volkrust High School shines during Eskom Science Expo

The Eskom Science Expo is a platform for young scientists to showcase their innovative projects, and this year's event saw three talented students present their research.

The expo aimed to encourage and recognise excellence in science and technology among young minds.

Zaid Chotia, a bright and ambitious student, presented a groundbreaking project on generating energy stored in a battery for various uses. His innovative approach has the potential to transform the energy sector.

Marlize van der Merwe conducted an experiment to determine the best metals for industries exposed to corrosive environments.

She found that aluminium and stainless steel offer superior resistance to corrosion, making them the ideal choices for metal use companies.

Marlize’s research highlights the importance of selecting the right materials to minimise long-term costs. She was awarded a bronze medal for her outstanding work.

Maryke van Niekerk created an all-natural cleaning agent, Eco Lemon Liquid, offering an eco-friendly alternative to conventional cleaning products.

Her two solutions, Solution 1 and Solution 2, demonstrated effectiveness and affordability. Solution 2, containing dishwashing liquid and tea tree oil, showed the most promising results.

Maryke’s project promotes sustainable living and reduces reliance on harmful chemicals. She also received a bronze medal for her exceptional work.

The Eskom Science Expo showcased the innovative projects of Zaid Chotia, Marlize Van Der Merwe, and Maryke Van Niekerk.

Their research and discoveries can drive positive change in energy storage, metal selection, and eco-friendly cleaning agents.

The expo highlighted the importance of supporting young scientists and encouraging them to pursue careers in science and technology.
