Audiologist raises awareness about hearing loss at ML Sultan

World Hearing Day is held on March 3 every year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss

As part of World Hearing Day, audiologist Karen Pillay and a team from Lenmed La Verna Private Hospital visited ML Sultan Primary School on Monday (March 4) to raise awareness about hearing loss.

Pillay said they have recently noticed that the number of children suffering from hearing problems is growing at a fast rate. As a result, some of them end up having to use a hearing aid.

She said this is often caused by technology and ‘the time we are living in’, with children constantly exposed to gadgets such as cellphones.

“Before, old people used to be the ones affected by hearing loss because of age. However, now, we have seen the trend of a growing number of youth who are experiencing the same thing,” said Pillay. She cited the use of earphones and headphones as the main cause of hearing loss, and advised learners to at least use headphones instead of earphones to lessen potential damage.
