VHS hosted its annual Relay Evening

The atmosphere was vibrant as the pavilion was packed with enthusiastic parents and supporters from different schools

It was a prestigious night at Vryheid High School (VHS) on Thursday, 8 February, when the school hosted its annual relay evening. The atmosphere was vibrant as the pavilion was packed with enthusiastic parents and supporters from different schools. The following schools participated: Vryheid High School, Hoerskool Pioneer, Inkamana High School, Ferrum High School, Sarel Cilliers High School and Vryheid Landbou. The competition was strong as all learners sought victory.

The following schools and respective age groups obtained 1st position: u/14 girls VHS, U/14 boys HS Pionier, u/15 girls HS Pionier, u/15 boys Ferrum, u/16 girls Ferrum, u/16 boys Landbou, u/17 girls Ferrum, u/17 boys Ferrum, u/19 girls Ferrum and u/19 boys Vryheid HS. Ferrum High School demonstrated excellent sportsmanship as they were the overall winners for the day.

VHS also participated in the Ferrum Falcon Sports Festival in Newcastle, on February 10. The festival was advantageous to learners as it prepared them for the winter sports season and PSG league. The festival tested both the learners’ mental and physical strength. The scores are as follows:

Our u/14 rugby boys played their hearts out and illustrated a high level of rugby as they won 29-0 against Sarel Cilliers, the u/15’s lost 5-28 against Ferrum, the u/16’s drew 15-15 against Ferrum, the second team lost 3-17 against Sarel and the first team lost 12-17 against Landbou.

The netball girls showcased great netball skills. The u/16s drew 11-11 against Ferrum, the 1st team won 37-8 against Pongola, the u/16s lost 7-21 against Ferrum and the 1st team lost 10-24 against Landbou.

The hockey teams also displayed admirable talent. The u/14’s drew 0-0 against Newcastle and lost 0-2 against Empangeni, the u/16’s won 3-0 against Sarel, the first boys’ team lost 0-2 against Ferrum, 0-1 against Newcastle, the first girls’ team won 1-0 against Sarel and lost 1-2 against Ferrum.

Lastly, our chess players did exceptionally well as no game was lost in this category. The chess team drew 5-5 against Ferrum, won 10-0 against Sarel, won 9-1 against Empangeni, won 9-1 against Newcastle and won 8-2 against Dundee. VHS was the overall winner of the chess tournament at the Ferrum Falcon Sports Festival.
