Celebrated on the first Wednesday of February, ‘Read Aloud Day’ aims at reading out loud and promoting reading as a whole.
The learners at Harpo Primary School have made it their culture to celebrate this day; they gather on the school grounds and read in different languages.
Various professionals were also present and gave speeches on the importance of reading.
Siyabonga Mpungose, who is a well-known poet and public figure from Durban, applauded the educators for promoting the culture of reading and told the children that reading and writing needs practice before one ‘gets it fully’.
Mr Mfeka, who is a librarian, mentioned that if you do not read, you perform poorly in academics. He told the learners what they can do to access a library and became a member. ‘’Reading has been lost in societies, but we have the potential to bring it back. One needs to learn from an early age to read with understanding. There is no shortcut in life; start now to learn how to read.’’
