Term 1 started on a high note at VHS

VHS prides itself on its sportsmanship of such high calibre

Last week ended on a high note on Friday when Vryheid High School (VHS) held its annual inter-house athletics meeting. The learners came out in numbers to participate and show their support. The day commenced with entertainment from the Grade 12s as they paraded around the school field; and finally sang and danced with the entire school on the pavilion. Then it was time for the respective track and field events. Great sportsmanship was seen as the learners showcased their talents throughout the day.
The trophy winners are as follows: Boet Pieterse for Boys’ U/19 200m – Aphiwe Mbatha, L Zellhuber for Javelin – Zani Wagner with a new record of 35.55m, Willie van Rooyen for Shot Put – Zani Wagner with a new record of 10.54m, Swanepoel Trofeë for Middle Distance – Ayathaba Nyandeni, Frans Bezuidenhout for Best Male Field Athlete – Given Dlala, Linda Bezuidenhout for Best Female Athlete – Zani Wagner, Attie Olmesdahl for Best Female Track Athlete – Tatum Glover, Bobby Tselentis for Junior Victrix Ludorum – Zani Wagner, Werndle for Junior Victrix Ludorum – Zain Hughes, Victrix Ludorum – Suné de Swart, Schalk van Heerden for Victor Ludorum – Sisanda Mpanza, Loanis Balalas for Best Athlete of the Day – Zani Wagner and Johannes Dyer for Field Numbers – Zani Wagner. ‘Grey King’ house was the overall winner on the day. Commenting on the wonderful talent and high numbers of participation in 2024, headmistress Ms A Nel said, “It was a good vibe!”
Subsequently, VHS athletes participated in the HPR Vriendskaplike Byeenkoms on February 3 in Piet Retief. The learners continued to demonstrate admirable talent. The medal winners for the day were as follows: Renco Globler – 400m bronze, Aphiwe Mbatha – 200m silver, Ayathaba Nyandeni – 400m silver, Zani Wagner – Javelin gold 42.45m (new record), U/14 girls’ relay – bronze, U/16 boys’ relay – bronze, U/17 boys’ relay – bronze, and U/19 boys’ relay – gold.
