Harpo holds subject exhibition for Grade 7s

“The primary purpose of the event is to have secondary schools exhibiting their subjects, culture and admission requirements for Grade 8. This seeks to inform Grade 7 learners and their parents of the expectations of secondary schools.''

The Grade 7 learners at Harpo Primary School were in for a treat on Thursday, as Mr Mhlungu and Mr Kubheka organised a subject exhibition for them.
The pupils gathered together and the programme began with a prayer.

Mr Kubheka outlined the aim of the day, saying, “The primary purpose of the event is to have secondary schools exhibiting their subjects, culture and admission requirements for Grade 8. This seeks to inform Grade 7 learners and their parents of the expectations of secondary schools. We don’t want learners loitering around and not studying due to lack of information, or peer pressure regarding school selection. This is informed by previous experiences where learners had to change schools in Grade 9 after realising that the subjects offered do not tally up with their desired careers or abilities.”

Individuals from different high schools around Vryheid were part of the exhibition.
Landbou High School told the Grade 7s what to expect when they get to their school and why they should consider enrolling at Landbou next year.
Isolomuzi Senior Secondary School learners spoke about their school attire and how it should be worn in summer and winter. They explained that Isolomuzi is a science school that also offers agricultural studies, and the Grade 7 Natural Science mark must be at least 50%.

Kwabhanya Secondary School learners also shared the stage by explaining the requirements in order to be accepted at this school, as well as the kind of behaviour that is tolerated within and outside the school premises. They mentioned that it is a school of excellence, with the pupils obtaining good percentages in matric over the years. It was explained that the school has three streams, which are: Science, Business and Tourism.

Karabo Mkhwanazi from the Department of Higher Education spoke about ‘artisan development’. She described the different types of artisans and advised parents not to neglect TVET colleges, as they offer both theory and practical education. She concluded by advising parents to let their child choose what career path they desire. She gave out a career guidance development number, which is 072 204 5056.
