New champion crowned at annual St Dom’s hockey tournament

The final between Newcastle High School and Sarel Cilliers was a cagey affair where no player wanted to make a mistake.

On Saturday 4 March, St Dominics hosted its annual Boys Preseason Hockey Tournament, which has become a mainstay and a highlight event on the sporting calendar.

It brings together the top boy’s hockey teams from Northern Natal to compete for the coveted SDN Trophy, which has been monopolised by St Dominics in recent years.

Saturday started off with a bang, with one of the biggest derbies in Northern Natal – the favourites Ferrum vs the hosts.

They went head to head and only proved why they had the ‘favourites’ tag.

It was a thriller and left the spectators wanting more, and more definitely followed!

What came next left the crowd in awe and no one could have predicted it.

The round-robin stage, where all the teams played against each other, had lots of goals and drama. It was proving to be an exceptional day of hockey, with everything going according to the script.

The semi-finals were where the script was flipped upside down as the favourites, Ferrum and St Dominics, lost to NHS and Sarel Cilliers respectively, which meant there would be new champion to be etched on the trophy!

The final between Newcastle High School and Sarel Cilliers was a cagey affair where no player wanted to make a mistake.

It went down to shoot-out, where NHS edged out Sarel Cilliers – and a new champion was crowned.

In the B section, Dundee High School and Sarel Cilliers played in the finals but due to a threat of thunderstorms, they shared the trophy.

Congratulations to all the schools on an exceptional day of hockey; it was one for the history books.
