Harpo Primary School encourages learners to read

Many schools and organisations across the globe celebrate ‘World Read Aloud Day’ on the first Wednesday in February. They do this by grabbing a book and, yes, reading out loud.

With this in mind, Harpo Primary School has created a culture all of their own to celebrate this day. The learners gather and listen to one another reading out loud in different languages. Pupils from both the intermediate and senior phase get involved in this exercise that improves reading skills.

Guests were also present to motivate the young ones and encourage them to make reading an everyday activity. A local librarian mentioned that, “In Vryheid, we have four libraries – two in Bhekuzulu, one in Vryheid town and one at eMondlo.” He suggested that the children acquire membership cards at these libraries so they can lend books either for pleasure or academic study. He further explained that they also teach computer skills at libraries.

Mrs Ncube and her team from the Department of Education talked about how they ‘appreciate Harpo Primary School for promoting reading’ and urged the learners to make use of libraries on a daily basis, as the school must develop and sustain its reading culture. She went on to say that if reading is encouraged, learning and teaching becomes easier. “Learners must make a point of listening to their teachers. When teachers say you must read, do exactly that, because it enriches the mind and takes you to places you have never been or seen,” urged Ncube.

The day was organised by Mr Mhlungu, working alongside Mr Mnguni, Mr Kubheka, school principal Ms Masombuko and the whole School Management Team. They invited speakers from different organisations such as Nedbank, Vodacom and Postnet, as well as learners from Inkanyiso Special School, who also shared the stage and read out loud.

The principal ended things off by giving a vote of thanks and saying, “We thank the Lord for giving us this day so we could celebrate it with the learners, because a reader will truly be a leader one day.” She thanked the educators, learners and guest speakers for attending the event.
