Pioneering choristers revisit Drakensberg Boys Choir School

It was a special day for the schooling fraternity

History was made at Drakensberg Boys Choir School (DBCS) on Saturday when 20 pioneer Drakie ‘old boys’ attended the first Founders’ Concert in the school’s existence.

There was much jubilation and excitement as these gentlemen assembled for the first time in 55 years.

Special mention must be made of Begley Goodchild and Francois Cronjé, who were the first choristers to be enrolled at DBCS.

During the course of the concert, ‘old boy’ Brian Reynolds (1968-1969) regaled both current Drakies and members of the audience with some amusing anecdotes and entertaining insights into Drakie life in the early days of the school’s existence.

The audience was treated to an exhilarating concert which included three moving pieces by the visiting Mpumalanga Youth Choir.

At the end of the performance, the ‘old boys’ and the visiting choir joined the Drakies on stage for a rousing rendition of ‘Shosholoza’.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir pioneers were each presented with a gift from the school, and enjoyed a lunchtime braai and catch-up at Dragon Peaks Restaurant.

Special thanks go to Mark Thomas (1968-1969) for co-ordinating the event.
