‘A Trip to The Galaxy’ at LHS science expo

Projects and experiments were planned and executed after seven months of hard work and dedication.

Lincoln Heights Secondary School proudly hosted its second Internal Science Expo on August 12. Nearby primary schools were also invited to attend this spectacular event.

Wind energy generators, recycled popcorn machines, hydraulic cranes, sensory deprivation tanks, solar powered cars and floating ‘maglev’ trains were among the presentations under the theme ‘A Trip to the Galaxy’.

The projects displayed highlighted LHS learners’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for the 21st century. The presentations also included projects from the Eskom Regional Science Expo which won gold and silver respectively: the Plastic Waste to Bio-fuel Project by Raeesha Hassiem and Neha Goli, and the Hydro-Electric Power Plant by Sameer Rampersadh and Rayhaan Khan.

Projects and experiments were planned and executed with great thought and precision, after seven months of hard work and dedication!

The Deputy Principals, Teachers, SGB members and learners who attended the expo were astounded by how professionally the learners presented their spectacular inventions.

The science behind record players, non-Newtonian fluid and the thrilling ‘gummy bear explosion’ were among the day’s highlights. The event came to a close with a bang, when the top three projects were revealed.

The winning project was the HYDRO Power LED Generator, built by matriculant, Nelisiwe Mbatha, which demonstrated how electricity is generated from a moving water-well to supply current to rural and urban areas.

A group of Grade 9 learners took second place for their highly economical Solar-Hydro-Watering-System, while the Mini Generator Electro Load-Shedding House took third place.

LHS has expressed gratitude to teacher, T Bissnath, who organised and coordinated this successful event, as well as all of the participants who displayed such amazing projects and experiments.

This event taught everyone that with a little creativity and discipline, anyone can come up with unique innovations.
