Learners’ foundation holds anti-drug campaign at school

''Whenever we talk about substance abuse, we are not trying to prevent drugs in schools, because it is not a school problem. It starts within oneself and in communities and homes.''

Learners who are part of the Youth Managers Foundation (YMF) at Vryheid Comprehensive Secondary School held an anti-drug campaign at the school on Friday.

YMF chairperson Sfisosethu Mbatha explained that they are an organisation that stands for leadership, honour, truth and responsibility. “We are the change that we want to see. As the YMF, we are committed to uplifting our communities. As YMF members, we decided to take a stand today and say we are against this corrosive cancer that has been eating our peers away, ie substance abuse.’’

Syanda Ndlovu, who is a former learner of the school and also the guest speaker on the day, read a scripture from Psalms 127 in the Bible and explained that substance abuse is not something new at schools. “Whenever we talk about substance abuse, we are not trying to prevent drugs in schools, because it is not a school problem. It starts within oneself and in communities and homes. It is a problem that is within someone and they must deal with it. Once you engage yourself with drugs, you will be like a broken arrow. Yes, you will still be sharp, but with no direction.’’

He motivated learners to stay away from negative things and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour so that their lives will be ruled by Him.

Mbatha expressed his gratitude to school principal Mr Maseko, as well as the educators and YMF members who went the extra mile to make the event a success.
