Municipality hosts SOD turning for Capricorn Switching Station revamp

Electricity distribution is set to be improved in three wards with the R22-million revamping of the Capricorn Switching Station in Lennoxton.

Newcastle Mayor, Xolani Dube, launched the project with the official sod-turning ceremony.

He described the project as ‘a significant milestone in their efforts to improve the lives of the residents.’

“This project will not only create over 10 job opportunities during construction but also ensure a reliable electricity supply, reducing power outages and making life easier for the communities of wards 3, 28, and 34 which will help reduce frequent outages in those areas,” Mayor Dube said.

“Our goal is to provide a better quality of life for our residents, and this project is a testament to our commitment to infrastructure development and community empowerment.” Mthandeni Myende (Manager: Communications and Customer Relations), said the revamp aimed to increase capacity on existing infrastructure and reduce power outages, a move, according to him, that will undoubtedly boost economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents. “Upgrades at the Capricorn Switching Station are critical to ensure efficient electricity distribution. With the incorporation of surge arresters and advanced switching gear equipment, the revamped station will provide enhanced protection against excessive lightning or switching surges, “he said.

The project handover report:

  • Project background: The original Capricona Switching Station was established in 1976 adjacent to the Capricona Hotel in Ward 3, Lennoxton.

The Department of Mineral Resources approved the necessary grant funding through the Integrated National Electrification Program, with an allocated budget of R7,7-million for this financial year.

Project objectives:

  • To provide electricity capacity to the residents around and in Ward 3;
  • To improve accessibility to the electrical department to improve on outage times;
  • Create temporary employment opportunities during construction;
  • To provide opportunities and promote the development of local emerging contractors.

Project scope:

  • Construction of the Switching Station;
  • Site Clearing;
  • Procurement of the 11kV switching panels;
  • Fencing.
