Transport department to recruit community development activists

This is a call to every community member to stand up and be involved in road safety campaigns

The MEC for Transport in KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma, has made a call to recruit 600 community development activists from all corners of the province to serve in the KZN Transport Forum.

“We are encouraging communities to nominate community development activists living in their wards to represent them in the forum. This nation-building project arises from our deep conviction that our road safety campaigns and efforts, aimed at speeding up the construction of road networks, will not succeed without the participation of communities,” said Duma.

A nominee must be a South African citizen, have completed Grade 12, and should not be employed full-time.

Nomination forms are available on Department of Transport social media platforms and at district offices.

The MEC said that going forward, they want to see fully-fledged Community Road Safety Councils (CRSCs) and Public Transport Passenger Associations (PTPAs).

“These structures will strengthen participatory democracy. In particular, we are determined to decentralise the decision-making process to each ward. This is a clarion call to each community member to stand up and be involved in road safety campaigns and all efforts aimed at strengthening the public transport system. Together, we must end the buying of driver’s licences and the fraudulent issuing of roadworthy certificates. We must fight against drunk and reckless driving as well,” said Duma.
